Why Water Treatment?

Microbiological and chemical contaminants can enter water supplies. The potential for health problems from drinking water is illustrated by localized outbreaks of water-borne disease. Many of these outbreaks have been linked to contamination by:

• protozoa including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, fatigue and weight loss.
• bacteria which can cause a variety of infectious disease, including typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, colibacillosis and cholera. Once in the water, they can survive for weeks, even longer if frozen in ice.
• viruses including hepatitis A and E, Norwalk virus, rotavirus, echovirus and poliovirus

Nitrate in drinking water pose an immediate threat to young children. Boiling water contaminated with nitrate increases the nitrate concentration and the potential risk.

Naturally occurring contaminants also are being found in drinking water including radioactive gas radon-222 occurs in certain types of rock and can get into ground water. People can be exposed to radon in water by drinking it, while showering, or when washing dishes.
