Reverse osmosis uses the city water pressure to force tap water through a semi permeable membrane. The water is directed across the membrane. The water that passes through the membrane will not bring the larger impurities with it. The pores of the membrane are very small at around .001 thousands of a micron. To compare the human hair is around 100 microns thick.

The impurities that remain pass into a drain to keep the membrane clean. Reverse Osmosis removes:

• virtually all organic compounds
• 90 to 99% of all ions
• 99.9+% of viruses, bacteria and pyrogens

Reverse osmosis membranes will virtually eliminate most:

• chemicals
• bacteria
• viruses
• parasites such as Cryptosporidium

from the water. It is much more energy efficient compared to heat-driven purification (distillation) and more efficient than the strong chemicals required for ion exchange.
